The history of the Warmbader Kurpark
It has always been the family that owns the thermal resort of Warmbad that has been responsible for the upkeep of the park. Mr. Ludwig Walter, an ancestor of the family, began to turn what was then a pasture area into a park. The design of the park itself was based on an idea of a thermal doctor, Dr. Trippolt, who spent six months of the year in Opatija and six months here in Warmbad. There, Dr. Trippolt discovered a beautiful park that inspired him. Based on this idea, the Warmbad park was created and designed. The idea behind the creation of the park was to give visitors the opportunity to stroll and relax in the thermal park after their treatments.
Over the years, collaborations have developed with [Kunstwerk] Krastal and various artists who have enriched the spa park with their works.
The Presidents of the Republic of Austria Dr. Adolf Schärf and Dr. Franz Jonas spent several times their summer retreats in Warmbad and greatly appreciated the park.
The park's current natural state is the result of positive cooperation between Warmbad's forestry, agricultural and nursery sectors. In recent years, all those involved have successfully implemented the transformation from a strict floral arrangement to a natural meadow that is also perfect for bees. Particularly rewarding is the cooperation with the Dobratsch Mountain Nature Park.

The Warmbad spa park as a haven of art
For decades, art from all genres has been promoted and collected at the health and spa resort, and permanent and changing exhibitions show how diverse artistic creation can be. Art sculptures by local and international artists can be found throughout the park. Here, art forms a bridge between the past, present and future and lends this place a special aura and its soothing flair.
Paul Watzlawick artwork in the Warmbad spa gardens
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Paul Watzlawick, the inauguration of the contemporary sculpture based on the motto "Everything is connected to everything" by the artist Regina Hübner also took place in the Warmbad spa park. With the installation, which was ceremoniously unveiled on 15 October 2021, the city of Villach wants to represent the concepts that were important to Watzlawick, such as "communication, relationship and reality". This park is a fitting location for the winning project on the 100th anniversary of Paul Watzlawick's birth. He liked to go for walks here, it was a fitting place for reflection - his mother lived in the adjacent "Villa Scotti" nearby at the time. The artwork fits perfectly into the Warmbad sculpture park, which can be admired all year round in the Warmbad spa park.

Green Flag Award
Due to this special combination, the health and thermal resort has decided to submit an entry for the "Green Flag Award". This is a quality seal for parks. The gardens and parks to be evaluated are checked according to strict British criteria for state of maintenance, cleanliness, public accessibility, barrier-free access, user orientation and much more. However, successful park management and marketing skills are also important prerequisites. The loyalty of the community and the visitors to the park is also an essential criterion for receiving the award.
On June 26th 2023, the two jurors of the Green Flag Commission, James-Jones McFarland and Carl McClean, went on site to assess the park in terms of all criteria. We are very proud because the green flag is now also flying over the Warmbad spa park! This makes it the first park in Austria to bear this award.
A big thank to the entire team of the gardening department and especially to Mr. Robert Walton, who initiated the submission for the award with great commitment and who was in charge of the processing!
